New Zealand Firearms Law relating to the AR-15

If you're going to build an AR-15, be sure you understand the law. This page is just a general overview, and is no substitute for reading and understanding the actual text of the laws. If you have concerns, please seek legal counsel before setting out to construct a black rifle.

If you have an AR-15 with any of the prohibited features on your rifle, you have a Military Style Semi Automatic (MSSA), which requires an E-cat license. The key to making it an A-cat rifle is to build the rifle without any of the listed features.

The Features

These are mostly optional cosmetic features with the exception of the pistol grip. If you remove the pistol grip you have a problem. There's no way to hold the weapon. That's where the Hammerhead comes in. Hammerhead's not a military pattern grip. While exceedingly strong and durable, it's not built to military specifications at all. It's important when you decide to build an A-cat rifle that you have none of the listed features on it.

How can you be sure that Hammerhead is legal? New Zealand police have determined that the Hammerhead is not a Military Pattern Pistol Grip.
