Assault Weapons Ban - Firearms Law 101

Several northeastern states and the District of Columbia retain a vestige of the 1994 Clinton crime bill, also known as the Assault Weapons Ban. While there are differences from state to state, due to the common source of these laws, there are similarities. If you're going to build an AR-15, be sure you understand the law. This page is just a general overview, and is no substitute for reading and understanding the actual text of the laws.

Basically, if you have an AR-15 with the capability to accept a detachable magazine and two or more of the evil features on your rifle, you have a prohibited Assault Weapon. The key is to only use one or fewer of the listed features.

The "Evil" Features

Of course these are not actually evil features. None of them makes the rifle any more dangerous by their being present. They're all optional cosmetic features with the exception of the pistol grip. If you remove the pistol grip you have a problem. There's no way to hold the weapon. It's important when you decide to build a rifle that you have one or fewer of the listed features on it.

Hammerhead permits use of a different evil feature, in this case a collapsible stock

How can you be sure that Hammerhead is not legally considered a pistol grip? Quite frankly, in CT, DC, Cook County IL, MA, NJ, and NY, as of now, you can't. We are working on getting a determination from the regulating bodies of each state (and DC) to rule that Hammerhead is not a pistol grip, but it is not certain (with the exception of CT, where the state police have been known to issue such determination letters) that they would even issue such a ruling, and what effect such a ruling would have on the legality of the product. Until then, you would be wise to consult your attorney and use Hammerhead in Type I or II configurations only and attach no other prohibited features on your rifle.
